Igniting Innovation: A Look Inside Kindle Communications' Dynamic Office Environment

In today's workplace, fostering creativity, collaboration, and innovation within the space is crucial for success. Kindle Communications, a Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) certified women-owned business specializing in communications and experiences for clients, recently embarked on a journey to create a vibrant and inspiring office space at 600 W. Fulton St. in Chicago’s West Loop.

Partnering with design firm, Harley Ellis Devereaux (HED) and project management team, ConopCo, Kindle Communications aimed to cultivate an environment that not only reflects their brand ethos but also encourages their team to ignite action and fuel change.

Design concept

Drawing inspiration from Kindle's motto, "Light a Fire," HED conceptualized a design centered around the theme of fire, symbolizing passion, energy, and transformation. The office layout revolves around a communal space, or "hearth," featuring a central island, a uniquely shaped sofa, and a large audiovisual display reminiscent of a cozy gathering spot at home. This central area serves as the heart of the office, where Kindle staff can come together, collaborate, and spark new ideas.

Key Features

Open and Collaborative Environment: The design emphasizes an open and collaborative work environment, with small "neighborhoods" for heads-down work and designated focus, huddle, and conference rooms for more concentrated meetings and discussions. Equipped with Herman Miller Aeron Chairs and Grand Rapids Dylan Communal Table, this space encourages comfort and productivity.

Bar/Café Centerpiece: At the core of the office space is a multifunctional Bar/Café area designed to accommodate various functions, further fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among employees. Furnished with Muuto Loft Stools and Fiber Chairs, along with Grand Rapids Orbit Cafe Tables, this area provides a comfortable and inviting setting for casual meetings, coffee breaks, and collaborative sessions.

Branding Elements: Kindle's slogan, "Kin.Kind.Kindle," serves as a guiding principle for the design team. A large burnt wood wall in the open office area not only provides brand support but also adds a touch of warmth and relatability. Meeting spaces are named creatively, reflecting the concept of fire (e.g., Oxygen, Heat, Fuel), while a prominent illuminated three-dimensional logo reinforces the brand identity.

Warm and Inviting Palette: The finish palette features light tones of wood for furniture and flooring, complemented by calm blue accents. This combination balances the heavier timber, red brick, and warm branded elements, creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.

Final Thoughts

Kindle Communications' new office space at 600 W. Fulton St., Chicago, Illinois, Suite 410, is more than just a workplace—it's a dynamic hub where creativity, collaboration, and innovation thrive. Through thoughtful design and strategic planning, the partnership between Kindle Communications and HED has resulted in a space that not only reflects the company's values but also inspires its employees to "light a fire" and make a positive impact in their industry.
